Is Burton back?

Sweeney Todd, which a few critics have seen at a recent screening, has been hailed as one of the best movies of 2007. The Johnny Depp starrer, arriving right at the peak of the Oscar bait season, is also been seen as Burton’s best since 1998’s Beetle Juice.

Be that as it may, Depp and Burton have made some great movies together. Among them is the much-adored Edward scissorhands and lesser movies like Sleepy Hollow and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Burton, when he began directing, was known for movies which were quirky, self-indulgent and idiosyncratic. After he made the first two Batman movies, Burton, however, became a brand. You could see just three shots of a Burton movie and immediately identify it.

With Sweeney Todd, will Burton add to his own peculiar brand of filmmaking and or will he test unchartered territory? I can’t wait. In Chennai, the movie is releasing in Inox, and probably at Satyam. Not sure when.
